In the true spirit of jazz, performing at the piano for me is all about the art of "spontaneous composition". Even when playing on an existing tune - whether a jazz standard, original composition, or pop song - the tune is only the jumping off point to a spontaneous creation each time. The term "spontaneous composition" is very deliberately chosen, as for me, improvised does not mean without form. Improvised music, for me, is about creating something spontaneously that has the beauty, form and thematic development of a well-conceived composition. It is also central to my pianism that the piano is seen as an entire symphony of potential colour, the orchestral possibilities of the piano being fully explored..... more
